Blandy's Alvada Madeira 5 anos

Castanha, ligeiramente saturada. Lágrima escorre rápidamente no copo.

Aromas:
Muito volátil no nariz, algum mel e principalmente especiaria (canela). Não impressiona.

Palato:
Carregado de álcool, um exagero. Corpo leve, sabe a mel velho, algum fruto seco e termina especiado.

English:
On a business trip to Madeira I was challenged by some members of the Portuguese Wine Bloggers to taste this new proposal from Blandy's. The locals have always said that  five years old is not a true Madeira wine, to feel the soul of it is necessary to start with minimum 10 years of age.

Made from a blend of Malmsey and Bual, this is the innovation that was introduced to this product.

Appearance:
Brown, slightly saturated. Tear runs down quickly in the glass.

Aromas:
Very volatile on the nose, some honey and spice (cinnamon). Not very impressive.

Palate:
Loaded with alcohol, an exaggeration. Light body, tastes to aged honey, some dried fruit with a spicy finish. It is sweet but the taste is not impressive because it has no impact or definition in the mouth. It lacks the structure, complexity and opulence of a typical Madeira wine.

Finish:
Long, due to alcohol presence.

Conclusion:
A bottle costs 8.5€. For me it's expensive for what it offers. Is this a Madeira wine? On the label it certainly is, but the content is closer to just a sweet wine.

Sitio do produtor:

English:
This wine was an icon of Portuguese wines. The last time I drank was about 5 years ago, at a birthday party where it came directly from the producer's lodge: three bottles of different vintages. I remember those wines were tense, very structured, filled with fat and wrapped in balsamic endless sensation.

Many years passed and I has heard that the Pêra Manca changed it's character and lost it's properties and has gotten worse, hence the challenge to revisit this wine.

Made from a blend of varieties Antão Vaz and Arinto.

Appearance:
Straw yellow color with green highlights. Do not leaves tear into the glass.

Aromas:
Very moderate aroma: stone fruit and citrus.

Palate:
It's dry in the mouth. Starts with an citrus attack followed by stone fruit and some mineral intensity. Stone fruit later imposes by itself. Everything has little expression, like a young wine. The acidity is fine but not enough to give life and structure. It ends with a slightly toasted feeling and balsamic sensation. It lacks impact, it lacks strength, he lacks volume! It is a pity because the flavors are well defined. How I wish that this wine fills the mouth.

Finish:
Medium.

Conclusion:
It costs 30€! Lost all its glory and shame of asking for so much money to offer so little. A disappointment.

Quinta do Caldeirão 2005 Tinto

Lágrima escorre rápidamente no copo.

Aromas:
Alguma baunilha no fundo.

Palato:

Custa 12€.

English:

Another wine from S. Joao da Pesqueira, Douro area, fertile to produce great reds.

Made from Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz.

Appearance:
Dark garnet, very dark. Tear runs down quickly in the glass.

Aromas:
It's like being under the trees with the leaves emerging in spring time, smell like pollen. It is very aromatic. Some vanilla in the background.

Palate:
This wine is hot, despite it's medium body it's powerful, real warms our body, alcohol could be more discreet. Maybe too astringent. Taste to red fruits: berries and raspberry, but could have more life, acidity is correct, but lacks volume. Ends with smooth vanilla hints.

Finish:
Long.

Conclusion:
It can be pleasing to anyone who wants to drink a red wine near the fireplace in winter but needs to be improved. Too much alcohol, needed to be softer and have more impact in the mouth. It costs 12€.

Amarelo palha, ligeiramente saturado. Lágrima escorre rapidamente.

Aromas:
Moderado no nariz.

Appearance:
Straw yellow, slightly saturated. Tear runs down quickly.

Aromas:
Moderate. Predominantly floral, with some traces of leaves and some hiding fruit .

Palate:
Light body and acidity very finely tuned giving it a sparkle in the mouth. Tastes ripe summer fruit, following some floral notes, goes through anise hints and ends intensely mineral, even salty. I felt no great enthusiasm in the mouth because the flavors are not well defined, are truly mixed.

Finish:
Medium.

Conslusion:
It costs 6.5€. The notoriety provides by the medals maked me to taste the wine, but I did not like the outcome. Turns out the flavors were processed in a blender.

Final:

Compre.

Long and deep. Penetrates into the flesh.
